Create an Account
The first obvious step would be to create a user account on CreateSpace. Go to https://www.createspace.com/ and create a new account. Once you’ve entered all the details, and chosen a password, click on ‘Create My Account’.
Start a New Project
After you’ve successfully created an account on CreateSpace, you will be led to a member Dashboard. Click on ‘Add New Title’, and start a new project.
Set-Up Your Project
Here, you’ll have to enter the title of your book and select a method of publishing your book. CreateSpace offers printed books, audio CDs, and DVD services. Here, we will go with the ‘Paperback’ option.
And now, choose a method of setting up your project. If you’re using CreateSpace for the first time, it is better to go with the ‘Guided’ process. Click on ‘Get Started.’
The next step is to enter the necessary details of your book like the title, subtitle, author’s name, any contributors, language, and publication date, etc.
Once you’ve entered all the details, click on ‘Save and Continue.’
The ISBN is a unique book number allotted to every new book that is published. It is mandatory to set up an ISBN before you proceed. CreateSpace helps you generate an ISBN for free. However, if you already have an ISBN, you can enter the same.
Once done, click ‘Next.’
The next step is to select the color of the pages, the ink, and the trim size. The default size is 6” x 9”, which is the most recommended for printed books.
Once you’ve chosen the interior styling of your book, you can upload your book on CreateSpace. Please ensure that your book is in a print-ready format, like .pdf, .doc, .docx, or .rtf.
After uploading, click on ‘Next.’
Now, select a front and back cover for your book. You can choose a matte cover or a glossy cover. CreateSpace helps you design your book cover with its free online tool. You can also hire a professional design expert to create a book cover starting from $399. Or, if you already have a book cover design, you can simply upload it on CreateSpace in a .pdf format.
Once done, click ‘Save.’
Now that you’ve entered all the details, chosen a book cover, and uploaded your book, you can submit it for a review. CreateSpace will review your book and respond to you within 24 hours on your registered email address.
In the meanwhile, you can do some other important things.
- Choose the distribution channels. Please note that when you publish a book, it will automatically be available on Amazon. However, you can also choose other distribution channels.
- Set a price for your book. You can use the built-in calculator to determine the royalties.
- Write a sales description for your book, mention the country of publication, author’s bio and assign keywords. These will ensure better marketing of your book once it’s published.
If CreateSpace finds your work appropriate, they will approve your book to be published and send it to you for a final review. Here, you can go through the book again and make any necessary edits and changes.
